Mirboo North Primary School - Response to the 2009
Black Saturday bushfires
Mirboo North Primary School Says Thank You
In January-February 2009, Australia experienced its largest natural disaster in recorded history with 173 people killed in a series of bushfires in Victoria. In Gippsland, 11 people were killed and 200 homes were destroyed.
The children from the Junior School of Mirboo North Primary School have captured the intensity of their experience of the bushfires through their artwork. Their paintings also reflect their gratitude for the community members who worked generously to save as many lives and homes as possible.
In collaboration with the Gippsland Campus of Monash University, Mirboo North Primary School has ensured that an enduring record of creative responses to the bushfires has been maintained. The courage of those who fought the fires and contributed in so many ways to the Gippsland community will always be remembered and appreciated.
