Glass from the Victorian State Craft Collection
8 October 2016 – 5 February 2017
Oblique showcases a selection of glass from the Victorian State Craft Collection (VSCC).The glass component of this collection has been on long term loan to Latrobe Regional Gallery since 2002. The VSCC comprises of 465 artworks in a range of mediums (glass, ceramics, metal, textiles, wood and leather) collected from 1977 to 1990, which were produced by some of the most innovative, experimental and non-conformist craft practitioners of the time.
The exhibition highlights works that diverge from the ordinary, using innovative techniques and combinations of processes such as sandblasting, devitrification, engraving, glass blowing, kiln forming, acid etching and frosting.
Focus is placed on craftsmanship, form, refraction, colour, narrative and symbolic content. The selected works are bold and often combine functionality with personal expression, presenting a mesmerising and concise reflection of Australian studio glass during the 1980’s.
