Latrobe Regional Gallery Celebrates 50 Years

One of Victoria’s largest regional galleries, Latrobe Regional Gallery at Morwell, turns 50 this year.

The Gallery is planning a large exhibition, drawn from its collection, borrowings and commissions to celebrate the milestone.

The artists included in the exhibition are all vital to the past and future of visual art in the Latrobe Valley and the wider Gippsland region.

The exhibition will be held from 11 September to 12 December 2021.

A fiftieth anniversary provides an opportunity to mark historical successes and cast eyes on the future; the exhibition ’50 Years, 50 Artists’ hopes to do both of these things.

“Latrobe Regional Gallery presents this exhibition as an opportunity for locals and visitors to the gallery to connect with works that acknowledge the changing face of our region through the many interpretations from artists over the years,” Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Sharon Gibson said.

Among the artists whose works will be on display are Rosalind Atkins, Rodney Forbes, Janina Green, Euan Heng, Nick Mount, Patrice Muthaymiles Mahoney, Jennifer Mullett, Heather Shimmen, Colin Suggett and Bill Young.

Four artists have been especially commissioned to create new work for the exhibition. Lesley Duxbury, Steaphan Paton, Louisa Waters and Kate Zizys will have new work addressing ideas relevant to life in central Gippsland.

A special calendar of public programs and events has been tailored to complement this show and encourage participation from all ages and skill levels for the whole family.

A major publication is being produced to accompany this important event.
