THE BIG PICTURE: The art of Bill Young
30 July to 23 October 2022
Gallery 4, 5 & 6
According to artist and friend Rodney Forbes, Bill Young “was a remarkable painter of intense vision and invention”. Young was a significant creative force in Gippsland. An artist of national reputation, he came to live and teach in the Latrobe Valley after studying art in Adelaide.
Much of his art, concerned itself with the landscape of Latrobe Valley, both the rolling hills and the industrial vistas. This exhibition celebrates Bill’s life and creative achievements after his sad death in 2021. The exhibition features work from his estate, works borrowed from artist friends, and artworks in the collection of Gippsland Art Gallery and from our very own collection at Latrobe Regional Gallery. The exhibition also includes the 20-metre work on paper, appropriately titled ‘The Big Picture’ which will be on display for the first time since its first showing in 1991. The work will be shown in Gallery 4, where the artist created the work during an artist in residence project.
A concurrent exhibition at arc Yinnar will feature a suite of unique drawings as well as a several of the artist’s sketchbooks.
