Equilibrium showcases aquatically themed works from the LRG Collection, ranging from traditional depictions of oceans and waterways to allegorical explorations of identity. The exhibition draws its title from a previously unexhibited work from the Collection, Marion Borgelt’s monumental The Void: Equilibrium (1994-1997). Overlaying ripple-like patterns to evoke submersion into one state from another, the work alludes to the fluid nature of human consciousness, and the desire to maintain balance between opposing forces.

Marion Borgelt’s work sits alongside works by other nationally acclaimed artists spanning the past 140 years, with a particular focus on artists from Gippsland and its neighbouring southern Victorian regions. Equilibrium provides an opportunity to celebrate the conceptual depth and national relevance of the Latrobe Regional Gallery Collection, while bringing to the surface some seldom-seen artistic treasures.
